The Little Match Girl
(Memories of grandmother)
Hans Christian Andersen

The little match girl was born into a family that had once been full of love. Her mother had been a gentle, kind woman who had filled their small home with warmth and laughter. But unfortunately, she passed away shortly after the little girl was born, leaving behind a husband and daughter who missed her deeply, even though the little girl was too young to remember her face.
Her father, who worked long hours at the local factory, had once been a strong, good-natured man who adored his wife. He had dreamed of building a happy life for his family, and losing his wife changed him profoundly. Heartbroken and overwhelmed, he turned to alcohol to dull his grief. Over time, he grew distant and bitter, his health deteriorating as he drank more, finding it harder to work at the factory and provide for his daughter.
Without her mother’s presence and with her father fading, the little girl might have been truly alone if not for her grandmother. Her grandmother was her light in a world that seemed filled with shadows. She moved into their home after her daughter’s passing, bringing comfort to the little girl with her kind eyes and warm hands.
Every night, her grandmother would tuck her into bed and tell her stories of magical lands and brave children who found happiness even in the darkest times. “My little star,” she would say softly, brushing the girl’s hair back, “you are loved. Remember, there is a place of warmth and joy waiting for you, even when the world seems cold.”
During the day, her grandmother would teach her to read by the dim light of their small window, sharing tales of kindness, bravery, and hope. And when her father was away at work, they would sing songs together, laughing until the room felt alive again. Those were the happiest times of the little girl’s life, and she cherished every moment.
But as her grandmother aged, her health began to fade. The little girl cared for her as best as she could, but one winter, her grandmother passed away, leaving an emptiness that filled the entire home. With her grandmother gone and her father weakened by his own despair, their home grew colder than ever.
Now, left with only memories of those loving moments, the little girl wandered the snowy streets alone, clutching her matches. She dreamed of the warmth of her grandmother’s arms and the kindness of her mother she had never known.
