Belling the Cat
Aesop

Once upon a time, in an old house nestled at the edge of a village, there lived a group of Mice. They scurried through the dark corners and hidden cracks, stealing bits of food and crumbs to survive. Life in the house was relatively peaceful for the Mice—until the arrival of a large, fierce Cat.
The Cat was swift, silent, and deadly. She would sneak through the house, her sharp claws and keen eyes making it impossible for the Mice to move about without fear. Many of the Mice had already fallen victim to her, and those who remained were too terrified to venture out of their hiding places.
One evening, after narrowly escaping another deadly pounce from the Cat, the Mice gathered in secret to discuss what could be done.
“This Cat is becoming too dangerous,” one Mouse declared, his voice trembling. “If we don’t do something soon, none of us will survive!”
The other Mice nodded in agreement, their whiskers twitching nervously. They needed a solution—and fast.
After much discussion, one young, clever Mouse stood up with a bright idea. "I’ve got it!" he squeaked excitedly. “Why don’t we tie a bell around the Cat’s neck? That way, whenever she moves, we’ll hear her coming and have time to run away!”
The Mice all gasped at the brilliance of the plan. “That’s a wonderful idea!” cried one of the elder Mice. “If we could hear her approach, she’d never be able to sneak up on us again!”
Excitement buzzed through the group. The Mice began to chatter among themselves, envisioning a life where they could move freely without fear. They could return to their old ways of foraging, playing, and living happily without the constant threat of the Cat looming over them.
But just as they were about to celebrate, a wise old Mouse, who had been silently listening, spoke up in a calm voice.
“This is indeed a clever plan,” he said slowly, his eyes narrowing thoughtfully. “But there is one question we have yet to answer.”
The other Mice turned to him, puzzled. “What question?” they asked.
“Who,” the old Mouse continued, his voice carrying a note of gravity, “is going to bell the Cat?”
Suddenly, the room fell silent. The Mice looked at one another, the excitement draining from their faces. They realized the truth in the old Mouse’s words. Tying a bell around the Cat’s neck sounded like a perfect solution—until they thought about the danger of getting close enough to the Cat to do it.
One by one, the Mice began to back away, shaking their heads. No one was brave enough to face the Cat directly. The idea, though brilliant in theory, was simply impossible to carry out.
And so, the Mice continued to live in fear of the Cat, understanding that while it’s easy to propose bold plans, it’s another thing entirely to make them a reality.
